I'm not sure what the curb weight of a bike is called when it's "full" of fluids, and for the life of me I can't figure why anyone would care what a bike weighs "dry," but does anyone know the weight of 650 with fuel, etc?

I read a review said 471 pounds full of gas. No doubt most of ours are closer to 500 pounds once you add a centerstand, crashbars, skidplate and (empty) luggage.

Specs say 427 lb dry. I assume that is just without gas.

Gasoline weighs 5.8 to 6.5 lb/gal depending on temperature. I guess that's why they spec it dry.

With a 5.8 gal tank, the gas will weigh 33.6 to 37.7 lb. So, it should weigh about 427+35.7+/-2.1= 462.7 +/- 2 lbs.

So Rich was right, 465 is a good number for the stock bike with no accessories.

Thanks, I'm trying to compare the weight of my new Wee and my old bike...

Anyone know if the DRY weight also exclude the other fluids: fork oil, coolant, engine oil? Or is it just the fuel that's the variable?

My understanding is that the dry weight is a computer generated value based on the weight of every individual part that makes up the bike. It has NOTHING to do with actually weighing a ready to ride bike with no gas in the tank. Dry weight does not include ANY fluids or the battery, or the even the toolkit. It's a totally worthless number aside from comparision to other equally worthless numbers. It's a scam to make you think that big fat pig of bike you're actually buying weighs less than it does.

There are lies, damn lies and mfgr specs. Same complaint goes for HP and torque claims. Those are estimated at the crankshaft. Expect to lose 15% on the way to the rear wheel with a chain drive.

So the only specs I actually believe are ones done by magazines doing shootouts comparing similar bikes using the same scales, dynos, etc. The www.MotorcycleUSA.com webzine does a good job IMO.

Did you actually weigh it, Rich? Or did you just calucate from the posted dry weight?

The reason I ask is, all the Japanese companies are famous for lying about dry weights and I don't necessarily believe Suzuki Inc.

Haven't weighed mine yet. The 465 is what I remember reading in a road test in one of the mags, it was actual wet weight not based on the Suzuki number. I may have the exact number wrong but it was in that area.
You're right to not trust Suzuki's numbers, the weights all the manufacturers give are works of fiction. :)
I'll try to get mine on the scales this week.

Its really hard to compare weights when there are so many numbers out there.

My Wee is a bit heavier than my old KLR 650 but feels like a feather next to my BMW K1200GT ( A heavyweight! at well over 650 pounds).

I quit looking at the numbers and just feel the bike. Its how it rides and handles that matters to me.

Well, at least until I have to pick it up or haul it anyway.

That IS excellent info. Thanks from me too. The DR650 at 358 versus 500+ for big trailie/all-road bikes shows what a Japanese dual-sport bike weighs. And it's considered to be a big fat pig by off-road standards.

I'm getting all hot and bothered by street legal dual-sport bikes like the KTM 525 EXC and TE Husqvarna series at 250 pounds (no gas). Less than 300 pounds full of gas is where I want to be when the (dirt) road ends and you start to go off-road... You WILL drop it or crash (if you're having any fun) and picking up a 300 pound bike is a LOT easier than a 500+ pound pig.

Yeah, it's not that WET weight is the ultimate measure of anything... but in my book it's more useful information than DRY weight ever will be.

All dirt bikes, by nature are too heavy. I rode MX bikes that weighed 220 that were too heavy. My current dirt bike at 185 , a trials bike, is too heavy, so I do not consider any street legal bikes to be "dirt bikes." (That includes the thumpers.)

After a lot of searching, I found a review of the DL650 that includes a precise WET WEIGHT measurement: 471.5 lbs .

There are links I'm sure elsewhere to this review, but I'll post it here for your interest This is an interesting site btw, scroll down to find the two pdf's on the DL650.

That's what Wikipedia says.

My guess is that the dry weight is related to shipping.

First post. I have a 650 on hold. Just reading through the posts and wonder why they just don't gas one up and put it on the scale. Who cares about dry weight. I don't ride it dry.

Pretty nice photos, lot of roads to keep track of. In the mountains we have to follow valleys everywhere, not the many different routes you can choose on flatter locales. The weather looks pretty perfect. Nicely done.

Thanks.

The scenery is not as dramatic as riding in amongst the mountains, but we do have a greater variety of roads to choose from.

Registration is moving right along and I'm thinking there may be as many as 75 riders at this event. Should be lots of fun.

You're right, owners don't really care about dry weights, but that is the usual benchmark set by the manufacturers who constantly lie about it. If challenged, then they have a ready excuse because of variables between wet and dry and semi weight, etc.

So, that's all that most consumers have to work with when making shopping decisions.
